Screenplay for No Children In Space

(revision immediately before merge)

Introduction

FEMALE NARRATOR (ADULT GEORGIANA)
(as if she's telling a story to children)
A long time ago, before your mothers and fathers were even born, everybody that was, lived on the Earth. Back then, space was a scary, dangerous place. Very few people would hazard to go there, almost no one stayed there for any length of time...
(very distinctly)
...and there were `no children in space'.

But change comes even if we close our eyes, and one day, a little girl much like you took the ride that would change the universe forever.

NCIS SB001 Introduction

On the Train in Kazakhstan

GEORGIANA is looking out of the train window. Her mother, HIROMI, looks at GEORGIANA's things on the table in front of her: a doll, a wooden box, four wooden colored pencils tied by a white ribbon.

There's a noise as the connecting door to the train compartment opens.

HIROMI looks up and smiles politely (but non-committally).

A (Kazakh?) family walks through the train car (on the way to dining car?). A YOUNG BOY is looking hard at GEORGIANA, then seems to reach a realization.

KAZAK BOY
Mama! Mama! to, chto yee ? (Mama, is that her?)
MOTHER
Shhhhhh!
KAZAK BOY
Georgiana Learner,
Kosmicheskaya devochka?

(that's Georgiana Learner! The space girl!) [то, что ее Космоческий Девушка]

MOTHER
Shhhhhh!!!

GEORGIANA looks away from the window when she hears her name, and starts to smile, but the family have already moved on to the end of the car.

HIROMI:
(In English)
Are you hungry?

HIROMI offers GEORGIANA some apples.

GEORGIANA shakes her head and returns to looking out the window. We follow her gaze outside, and then fall back away and up from the train as it crosses the desert. Fade to black.

Baikonur

HIROMI and GEORGIANA come off the train, following a PORTER who is helping them with the large ISF TRUNK using a large dolly. They walk across the platform, and out into the sunshine. As HIROMI and the PORTER move the trunk into a large van, GEORGIANA runs around, obviously curious and glad to be outside again.

They see the town of Baikonur (montage).

Then we transition to the pre-flight press conference.

Press Conference

INT – PRESS CONFERENCE At a press conference, HIROMI, SERGEI, and GEORGIANA are all present, but GEORGIANA is coloring on a set of space coloring pages at the table...

Crowds of people in the audience. Bright lights. We are looking over the shoulder of GEORGIANA as she colors on a sheet of paper. She is drawing the statue that we saw before and herself beside it. She looks over at her mother who sits next to her on the table.

Looking at the table from the audience we see A REPORTER in a suit, SERGEI, HIROMI, and GEORGIANA (coloring)

REPORTER (to Hiromi)
How long have you planned to go into space?
HIROMI
Well, I suppose since the first day I met my husband Robert Lerner. I attended one of his lectures and I realized that the colonization of the moon is not just a government or even a society's decision, it is a personal one. I knew then that if there were going to be colonists on the moon that I would have to be one of them.
REPORTER
So Robert Lerner and yourself. Sounds like an amazing love story. Care to enlighten us?
HIROMI
Perhaps another time.
(Murmurs from audience. An AWWW!)

SERGEI picks up a glass of water.

REPORTER
Did you always plan to take your children with you to the moon.
HIROMI
No actually. Our plan was to go to the moon and have children there.
REPORTER
Alone on the moon? Weren't you afraid.
HIROMI
Afraid of what?
REPORTER
Complications with the birth or pregnancy... running out of diapers.
( Audience laughter)
HIROMI
I guess we supposed that we would get by.
And let me take this time to say that what we are doing, taking my daughter with me to space, is no different than what colonists have always done. When the first immigrants went to colonize the Americas it was, by no stretch of the imagination, safe. But people took their families with them. The family is the basic unit of society. You cannot start a new culture, a new society with only single men and women. We need families to make settlements and that means children.
REPORTER
But aren't you afraid that GEORGIANA might die in the harsh reality that is space?
HIROMI
She could die here. Of diseases spread by overcrowding. Of natural disaster. Of crime.
Honestly I think that she will be much safer there than here. This is not a decision that we took lightly or without thought. We evaluated everything. We created custom space suits, redesigned spaces in the vehicle. A massive amount of design work has gone into making sure that Georgy will have the safest trip possible. Honestly this trip to the moon will actually be less dangerous than driving Georgy to school for a year.
Also, I can't help but think that the best place for a child is with her parents.

REPORTER
And Commander Titov what are your thoughts about the flight.
SERGEI
I'm looking forward to it. Little Georgiana is like a little niece to me. It's wonderful to think that I can show her where I work.
REPORTER
Well I can see that our time is up. Good Luck on your flight, and know that all our dreams and hopes go with you.
SERGEI
Thank You
HIROMI
Thank you (aside to Georgiana) Georgy.

GEORGIANA looks up. Lights shine in her face.

GEORGIANA
Thank you all so much.
(The crowd sighs and applauds.)

Lights increase until the screen is white. Fade to next scene.

Suiting Up

INT – BAIKONUR LAUNCH COMPLEX – PREP ROOM

Launch crew checks seals on GEORGIANA's suit.

PAD-CREW WOMAN:
Вы все в порядке. хороши. All okay.
(You are okay. Good. All okay)

Georgy holds up her doll who is also in a space suit.

Crew woman smiles a big smile and checks the doll's space suit Crew woman: And your doll, she is good too.

PAD-CREW WOMAN:
да, ваша кукла хорошо тоже.
(Yes, your doll is okay too)

We cut to a little later, with HIROMI getting her suit on. GEORGIANA is holding her ventilator. Two technicians are helping HIROMI with her suit.

HIROMI:
This doesn't feel straight.
PAD-CREW MAN:
(Russian accent, but in English)
Is this better?
HIROMI:
Yes, that's much better.
(to GEORGIANA)
Georgiana, come here. Are you Okay?

GEORGIANA nods.

HIROMI:
It won't be long now. And in a few days, we'll see Daddy again. Would you like that?

GEORGIANA nods a little more enthusiastically.

HIROMI smiles and takes GEORGIANA's space-suited hand.

PAD-CREW WOMAN secures the doll to GEORGIANA's spacesuit using a velcro strap that seems to have been added for that purpose.

We cut again to GEORGIANA's face, but she's wearing the snoopy cap now, and her helmet is closed. She's in the small test seat, and there are some test cables attached to the suit.

HIROMI
(filtered voiceover)
Testing. Testing. Sergei are you receiving?
SERGEI
Affirmative.
HIROMI
Georgy, can you hear me now?

GEORGIANA nods and smiles.

SERGEI (laughing)
Ahh, the little one is listening. I'll have to watch my language when we take off.

PAD-CREW MAN
It's time.

Cut to the three walking out towards the pad. HIROMI is holding both her own ventilator and GEORGIANA's. SERGEI looks pretty normal. Of course, there is the incongruity of GEORGIANA's small size. These shots show them from the front.

EXT / INT - MONTAGE

Launch Pad

HIROMI leans forward so that she can see GEORGIANA's face. She waves and touches the intercom control

HIROMI (to Georgiana)
Remember what we said. There will be a little pressure pushing you in your seat. Like at the ::amusement park, but it won't last long. Mommy is right here if you need anything. Okay?

Hiromi nods

SERGEI
Trust your uncle Sergei. I'll drive us up to the space station. No problem. Da!

SERGEI checks the strap on the stuffed animal. Then sits back checking his own straps. He touches the controls, checking them. Then there is a moment of silence as they all sit back. Chatter over the intercom. Only Sergei replies.

SERGEI (in Russian)
Ready.

On the exterior, the gantries are being lowered, and the fuel line is disconnected. We hear...

GEORGIANA
Can I have it now.
SERGEI (laughs)
HIROMI
Alright Georgy.
SERGEI
Here little one.

Sergei releases the strap and pushes the STUFFED TOY over to Georgy with a bit of a spin. GEORGIANA catches it and she smiles.

Media Collage

There is now a rather jarring cut and an abrupt change in the music as we see a television news-anchor reporting on the mission. A news graphic with the caption "Spaceship with a Child Seat?" appears in the upper right corner of the screen.

NEWS ANCHOR:
Today, a specially modified surplus Soyuz-SF spacecraft carried what one commentator called the 'most precious cargo ever launched' into Earth orbit.
Young Georgiana Lerner, her mother, Hiromi Lerner and Russian cosmonaut, Sergei Titov, are on their way to the moon. Little Georgiana will be going to live on the International Space Foundations Space Colony run by her father Robert Lerner.

So, is this human progress or dangerous child abuse. Give us your opinion now. We cut to a daytime talk show in which two activists are talking to a host about the dangers and "irresponsibility" of taking a child into space.

FIRST GUEST:
Space is one of the most hostile places imaginable. To take their own children into that kind of danger? It's irresponsible … criminally irresponsible and cruel. These people should be put in jail. Someone needs to make them explain themselves. They shouldn't be allowed to do it.
ANNOUNCER
But they've already done it. They launched today.
SECOND GUEST:
And that's precisely what we've been asking them to explain. Scientists tell us that space is the most hostile environment humans have ever known. And yet they want to take children to play around in that?
HOST #1 simply nods encouragingly.
FIRST GUEST
How can they do that. They should be shot. Really … Bang!

We cut to another, more "serious issues" talk show. The guest here is actually Rob Lerner, though of course, the audience doesn't know this yet.

HOST #2:

Do you think there's a place for children in a space colony?

ROB:
Children are precisely what defines a settlement. We can't say we've got colonies on the Moon until there are children there. Children are the sign that you mean to stay there. A colony is a self-sufficient piece of humanity, not just an outpost that a few people get assigned to to do a job, and that's what this project is all about: a sustainable, self-sufficient, colony on the Moon. And that means children...
HOST
But the dangers of living in space.
ROB
Now this is something that I want to address. I've heard this argument before. We aren't living in the Apollo era. We've had 80 years of experience traveling in space. Space travel is currently less dangerous than global travel. Also, Earth is only a week away. We're not likely to starve to death or freeze. My daughter will most likely have a longer healthier life on the moon than most children alive today.
HOST
You believe that?
ROB
Yes, I truly believe that.

We cut to a "street interview" with WOMAN #1 who looks to be lower-middle class in everyday clothes.

WOMAN-IN-STREET #1:
They're spending millions shooting that little girl out into space, and that's nice, but what about all the kids right here on Earth who can't even get enough to eat? That's what I want to know...

Another street interview with a little boy.

BOY-IN-STREET:
I want to go into space, too!

Another street interview with another young woman.

MAN-IN-STREET #2:
...so like, what kind of crazy lunatics are these guys?!

Anya is watching the news.

We see the back of her head.

She is wearing Red Shoes. She crosses her feet.

She holds up her gloved hand and closes it turning off the monitor. We never see her face.

EXT – SOYUZ – SPACE STATION RENDEVOUS

At this point, we return to space. The screen is initially empty with the limb of the Earth below and black space above. The title "LUNATICS" appears across the black space, along with the drum riff, and then fades as the Soyuz orbiter sweeps into view from above.

MAIN TITLES – PILOT VERSION

While the titles are displayed, we see a number of shots of the Soyuz orbiter flying through space over the Earth, of GEORGIANA staring out the observation window. And other scenes of activity in the orbiter.

Space Station

They meet up with the space station and dock. GEORGIANA, due mainly to her small size manages to be first through, flying past HIROMI and SERGEI who are interacting with the ASTRONAUT who came to greet them. GEORGIANA goes exploring.

She encounters a group of three ASTRONAUTS who are moving a large piece of equipment (it's an instrument package for Iridium, headed for the same shuttle they will be riding on, but GEORGIANA doesn't know this).

She watches them quietly while they work. One astronaut does notice her and smiles, but they are mostly absorbed in what they are doing.

Then she hears a goat bleating and sees the escapee bounce off a panel in an adjacent module.

TIM:
(in the background)
The goat's loose again!

GEORGIANA bounces back towards Tim's voice, now carrying the goat. Tim presently comes into view, and they proceed back towards the LTS/Artemis tug.

[... some more character action seems appropriate here, but I haven't got it ...]

DOCKING

THEY FLOAT INTO SPACE STATION.

TIM AND JOSH SHOW UP

TIM IN THE DISTANCE CHASING A GOAT.

TIM: Hey you. Come back!

GEORGY LAUNCHES ACROSS THE HALL AND CATCHES THE BABY GOAT IN HER ARMS.

TIM CATCHES UP TO HER.

TIM: Thank's Georgy. Come on.

HE LEADS HER TO AN OPEN CARRIER. THERE IS ANOTHER GOAT HERE.

NCIS SB010 Space Station

Loading the Moon Shuttle

We cut ahead a little to our crew loading the shuttle. HIROMI and TIM have got a tag-team going, tossing water bags up and then over into the hatch. JOSH is inside the LTS catching and stowing the bags. GEORGIANA is basically just watching, though she does carry her own bags into the shuttle to put them up. We can hear the goats making noise in the shuttle.

A group of three air force officers, bound for the Moon join them. They are visibly taken aback by the colonists, who do not seem to be of the right caliber to be in their rarified world of spaceflight. But they also think GEORGIANA is cute and smile.

The PILOT comes aboard as well.

PAN THROUGH SHUTTLE, SEE LAY OUT AND PASSENGERS, MILITARY. ONE OF THE MILITARY GUYS LOOKS BACK AT GEORGY AS HAVING HER THERE IS STRANGE. TIM FLOATS BY WITH SERGEI AND THEY GO INTO THE COCKPIT.

The goats find themselves in gravity again.

TIM:
(excited)
Now we are on our way!

We follow the craft behind in the "locomotive" view as it passes over the Earth with increasing speed, and the Moon rises into view. The engine stops.

GEORGIANA:
Woo!
JOSH:
Feeling the butteflies?

We end with a shot of the spacecraft rising up towards the camera with the shrinking Earth in the background.

Tucking In Georgiana

HIROMI tucking in GEORGIANA to sleep.

GEORGIANA:
(off camera)
Can I have some water?
HIROMI:
Certainly, honey...

She gets out a squeeze bag of water with a straw. GEORGIANA finds this interesting, and takes the bag to sip. She's zipped up in a freefall sleeping bag to keep her from floating around the cabin. GEORGIANA finishes the water, and HIROMI takes it back, kissing her on the forehead.

HIROMI:
Now you need to get sleep dear. You've had a pretty big day today haven't you?
GEORGIANA:
Mm-hmm. Good night, Mommy.

HIROMI gives her a little squeeze and then moves away towards the front end of the module.

ON A SIDE SECTION, HIROMI HAS HER FEET LOCKED UNDER A PANEL AND IS LEANING CLOSE TO A SCREEN.

She has a laptop set up near her couch, and she makes a connection to the Moon using it.

We see ROB on the screen, and HIROMI converses quietly with him, but we can't really hear what she is saying.

HIROMI:
No, everything went fine, the lauch was perfect...
Yes, she's well. She's not eating much, but that's to be expected. How about the tank? Were they able to get the catfish started without me?
That's good ... We'll be there soon... Love you too dear.
Good bye... yes, yes I will... good bye.

There are a few taps of the keys. The scene, both music and image, slowly fades out (GEORGIANA goes to sleep).

There's a complex docking sequence, as with Iridium Station, but we see more of this one. At the very end, we can see a window-through-window shot of Rob's face as they dock.

ROB:
Hiromi! Welcome home!
GEORGIANA:
Daddy!
ROB
Georgie!

ROB hugs GEORGIANA and swings her around higher than he would normally be able to do on Earth.

There's a three way hug at first. JOSH, ANYA, and TIM come out behind them. They are carrying some baggage, which they put down on the floor in AIRLOCK_RECEPTION_CUBE.

HIROMI:

Day One

This starts out as a continuation of the previous scene. As a montage, it condenses a lot of routine action needed to unpack and set-up the colony. It ends with HIROMI in the kitchen, with various others coming and going as they prepare their first dinner.

There is a fade out, and then...

The scene fades back in. The dinner is made, and all of the colonists are in the DINING ROOM. The scene collapses to one side of the screen, and we see the principle titles on the right.

From "The Landing" story -- want to reorder/reassign these lines:

"What did you say the name of the colony was?" Mr Suriwa asked.

"Satori" Hiromi said

"I thought that we had decided on Ataraxia!" Emerson cut in." Similar context without the Buddist overtones."

"Wait a second." Sarah chimed in," weren't we gonna call it Amistad or something?"

"You mean like the slave ship?" Emerson asked.

"What about Union?" Sara countered.

"You want I should just paint a fist on the wall. Union, a fitting name for a totalitarian state."

"Well Ataraxia sounds like some kind of sickness." Sarah countered sticking out her tongue.

"Ataraxia is a greek word that means freedom from care and worry. Freedom is what this colony is all about and we already decided on it. It's Ataraxia."

"I like Quivira" Anya said.

"How about troika?" Timothy said as he bounced forward turning to get a view of them all with his camera.

"We already decided before we left Earth. Was I the only one paying attention at that staff meeting? We decided on Ataraxia colony."

"Now now" John said, " We'll discuss it in our next colony meeting. "

ROB:
[? a short speech before the meal]

As people start to eat -- so we hear table noises.

TIM:
We still haven't agreed on a name for this colony, you know...
HIROMI:
I thought we had decided on...
ANYA:
No, it was going to be..."
JOSH:
(laughs)
Well this is a fine way to start!

Everyone is eating by then.
